Informed Consent
Counselling is a confidential process designed to help you address your concerns while learning effective personal and interpersonal coping strategies.
It involves a relationship between you and a qualified and registered counsellor, who has the desire and willingness to help you accomplish your individual goals.
Counselling involves sharing sensitive, personal, and private information that may at times be distressing.
The outcome of counselling is often positive; however, the level of satisfaction for any individual is not predictable.
Confidentiality
All interactions with counselling services, including scheduling of or attendance at appointments, content of your sessions, progress in counselling, and your records are confidential.
You may request in writing that your counsellor release specific information about your counselling to persons you designate. No information will ever be shared without your prior consent
Limits to Confidentiality
Your counsellor may need to breach confidentiality in specific circumstances to ensure your safety and the safety of others. Such circumstances are:
If you are an imminent danger to yourself or others
If you report that a child or vulnerable adult is being sexually or physically abused or severely neglected, or is at risk of such abuse
If you are operating a motor vehicle in an unsafe fashion, as per the Motor Vehicle Act (danger to yourself or others)
If a court orders, or any other authorized law requires the disclosure of your records.
